Win a copy of Employment Bites – The bite-sized guide to better human resources with up-to-date examples for New Zealand companies
by Angela Atkins
RRP: $26.99 HARPERCOLLINS
Angela Atkins is an experienced human resources (HR) and training manager and in her 13 years in HR she’s learnt that for HR to be practical and useful you have to design processes that address the needs of the organisation, and you work WITH managers, involve them and get them to agree, so the processes actually work.
Using practical examples of real-life human resources solutions from New Zealand companies, Employment Bites shows you how to work with managers and employees in every area of employment to make the company more effective and a great place to work.
Employment Bites is for anyone who works with employment issues or responsibilities.
Employment Bites is split into 23 easy-to-manage bite-sized chunks, each one dealing with one particular area of HR. Each bite talks about how HR can add value in that area as well as giving you lots of useful examples on how to do this and how to develop your human resources skills.
Specifically:
• How to implement an effective HR plan
• New Zealand employment case law examples
• Attracting and recruiting the right people and inducting them effectively
• Measuring performance, developing skills and managing talent
• Dealing with disciplinary issues, restructures and dismissal
• Remuneration systems, benefits and how to recognise and reward employees
• Managing change and creating retention
HRINZ HR blog has three copies of Employment Bites to give away; to be in the draw, simply comment below with the HR area you most enjoy reading and learning about by 30 April 2010

I most enjoy reading and learning about misconduct.
I am enthralled when reading in the area of Learning and Development, especially with the need for delivering comprehensive programmes, while managing the challenges presented in the current economic climate.
I like kiwi bites that have a New Zealand flavour
Great idea this blog, I most enjoy hearing other people’s practical examples of real life problems, things we can learn from one another how to handle, or not to handle maybe, the varying situations we find ourselves in.
The idea of a blog where we can offer up suggestions sounds fantastic – and also very useful format for reading.
I have recently seen Angela in action at the HR Refresh workshops and am keen to check this book out for myself.
Yeah for the book and the blog – I am looking forward to reading Angela’s Employment Bites, especially the chunk on *Measuring performance, developing skills and managing talent* – too often I come across loyal, hard working employees who don’t realise their own potential and uniqueness; I am passionate about seeing others develop their natural talents and skills in alignment with the company’s goals.
I most enjoy reading about attraction and recruitment in the 21st century – keeping up with the technology that is available to us. Real life examples always make things more interesting – good to hear about what has tried, tested and successful.
I recently attended a Refresh HR Seminar with Angela, which was fantastic. Starting out in my HR career, Employment Bites would be a fantastic resource.
I have read the reviews for this book about three times now from differents sources which has led me find out more about Angela and what she has to offer ER/HR practitioners. Being at early intermediate level in my field, having a copy of this book would certainly be a great advantage and a gain which I would be most appreciative of.
I have read so many fantastic reviews about this book and really enjoy attending the HR Refresh Workshops. It’s great the we can read bite size information about all aspects of HR especially when we need an answer yesterday. My favourite aspects of HR at the moment are organisational and culture change, and remuneration.
I’m currently interested in the aging workforce and it’s implications on NZ business and HR strategies.
