My name is Flora and I’m 24 years old. I graduated in June 2008 with a BCom in Management. My first HR role was with a bank in the phone team answering calls from line managers about policies and procedures. I lasted there almost two years. It wasn’t the most exciting role but I got to see what big companies do with their HR. I started six months ago as an HR Adviser at Funky Town. Funky Town is a chain of young women’s clothing stores around New Zealand. We have 60 branches, a distribution warehouse and support office. My role is really cool with lots of variety. I do recruitment, employment agreements, coordinate the performance review process, help managers with issues (I’m hoping to do my first disciplinary this year) and of course the boring stuff like filing. The receptionist is also our HR Administrator so I get to delegate some stuff too and we have a Payroll Manager. I also get a staff discount, did I mention that? The Head of HR, Chris, is very busy as she’s also the Training Manager. She kind of leaves me to my own devices most of the time. Which is good and bad. I would like to discuss things with her sometimes. So I’m sharing them here – in my HR Diary (featured in the HumanResources magazine and here on the HRINZ HR blog) and I’ve love to hear your thoughts and advice.
